A Look Back: The Margaret and Isaac Barpal Veterinary Center

Their dogs change lives, and this design-build veterinary center provides Southeastern Guide Dog’s super canines with the care that they need.

Southeastern Guide Dogs (SEGD) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping those who cannot see, veterans with disabilities and children with significant challenges. They breed raise and train guide dogs, service dogs and skilled companion dogs to pair with those who need them.

In 2011, SEGD began a mission to update their campus with new and improved buildings and facilities for their animals and students; beginning with a brand new state-of-the-art veterinary hospital. BDA was chosen as the Architect for this important project and together with our in-house construction company CMP, Inc., we delivered an updated and innovative new veterinary center to meet the needs of SEGD and their canines.

This was the first design-build project by BDA/CMP for the campus renovation for SEGD and it replaced an old, cramped and insufficiently equipped clinic that SEGD used to have with a brand-new 5,800 square foot veterinary facility. Named for the donors who helped make it possible, The Margaret & Isaac Barpal Veterinary Center is a fully outfitted veterinary hospital located on the SEGD campus that provides care to their amazing canines from birth through their training and beyond.

With 3 exam rooms, a treatment room, imaging and surgery, this clinic can perform physicals, vaccinations, x-rays, spay and neuter procedures, dental cleanings, eye exams, cardiac exams and blood work. Other veterinary spaces include endoscopy, medical ward, isolation ward, lab and pharmacy.

The center also has spaces for genetics and reproductive procedures with separate wards for male and female breeders, ultrasound, canine lounge and a whelping room. In offering all the best care to their guide dogs the veterinary center also provides non-traditional medicine in massage and acupuncture.

With an efficient floor plan and cleaning & maintenance in mind, ample space and state-of-the-art equipment, The Margaret & Isaac Barpal Veterinary Center aides Southeastern Guide Dogs in continuing their life changing work.
